Focusing on the singer’s early years, the collection includes four tracks from a 1956 set in Atlantic City that Simone never knew were being recorded in the first place (the bootleg first emerged in 1964). The rest of the album consists of several songs from her time on Colpix Records at the beginning of the Sixties as well as live takes from this period. All in all, Strange Fruit maps Simone’s growth towards her becoming one of the most formidable voices in popular music.
