Defined by its raw, minimal, hip-hop inspired rum-machine rhythms, reggae-influenced bass, and synth riffs topped with sweet, soaring vocals, UK street soul was born from the clubs, blues parties, and pirate radio of black inner city neighborhoods in late ‘80s United Kingdom. You’d be hard pressed to find a more central figure to the story of the genre than Toyin Agbetu and his legendary Soul Connection duo with Earl Myers. A former computer programming prodigy, Agbetu was a prolific musician who worked under myriad pseudonyms including Nemesis and Shades of Black while masterminding innovative productions for the likes of Mary Pearce and Rosaline Joyce for his Intrigue Records and Unyque Artists imprints.
Invisible City Editions presents a selection of underground classics from Soul Connection's 1988 Rough & Ready and 1990 Raw Street Soul LPs. These addictively simple hooks, punchy mid-tempo rhythms, and forays into breakbeat and house have been remastered from the original master reels for a package that includes an 8-page booklet featuring an interview with Toyin Agbetu from Jeff “Chairman” Mao.
